In 1957 Jayne won a Golden Globe for New Star Of The Year for her performance as the lead in 'The Wayward Bus' and she was critically praised. She then reprised her role as Rita Marlowe in the film version of 'Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?' co-starring Tony Randall and Joan Blondell, which again was a success. She was then placed opposite Cary Grant in the coyly named 'Kiss Them For Me'

Despite her flair for publicity and her popularity with the public, good film roles dried up after 1959 although She kept busy in a series of low-budget films, mostly made in Europe. These included 'Too Hot to Handle', directed by Terence Young and 'The Challenge', both in 1960.

Although her film career was sinking, she still commanded an enormous salary for her nightclub act and she traveled all over the world with her nightclub performances. She was popular to the end.

Jayne died in a car accident on June 29, 1967. Whilst being driven to a club engagement in New Orleans, the car crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer that had slowed suddenly. The automobile struck the rear of the semi tractor and went under it. The adults in the front seat were killed instantly. The children in the rear survived with minor injuries. Contrary to popular belief Jayne was not decapitated but suffered major trauma to the head. She is interred in Fairview Cemetery, southeast of Pen Argyl.
